It’s January in Southwest Michigan and there’s no better time to practice your double axle! We’ve found a few local skating spots for to slip and slide on over to.

  1. The Ice Rink at Millennium Park in Portage is the best place to take a date! Open Thursday to Sunday until 9:00 pm, you can twirl the ice hand in hand and take that perfect relationship confirmation selfie for Instagram under the lights. This rink is outdoors, so remember to grab a pair of mittens before you go!
  2. If you like to be outside but prefer a roof over your head to keep the snow out of your eyes, check out John and Dede Howard Ice Arena in St. Joseph. Here, the outdoor rink beckons with a warming house and a hot cup of cocoa. Sounds delicious!
  3. Wings West is probably best for those who don’t want a cold weather test. This place is great for figure and hockey skate lovers alike, and even better for those who love wings. Wings? Yup. Old Burdick’s Wing’s West is right on-site for your post-skate snack attack.
  4. Looking to glide and just relax? Western Michigan University’s Lawson Ice Arena might be the rink for you. View the open skate schedule before you head out, especially since those Broncos are in season. Can’t seem to stand up on your own? Is every move a death spiral to you? Leave your skates in the car if you’re no Michelle Kwan or Johnny Weir, and just go watch those Broncos take on their rival skaters!
