To help our community members make informed choices in the upcoming election, we asked candidates running for important local, state, and national seats to participate in our Forum to help you get to know them better. Today, meet Ron Hawkins.

Inspired to serve from a young age by his father, a WWII veteran, and President John F. Kennedy, Ron Hawkins is running to represent the 63^rd District as State Representative. Ron explained that his adult life “has been spent in service to the nation in the Federal Government’s largest bureaucracy, the Department of Defense, both in active duty and civilian service.” As State Representative, Ron would focus on supporting his constituents by performing his duties within the structure of the State of Michigan’s Constitution as well as working, not fighting, with fellow legislators to accomplish legislation. In addition to the policy-focused questions, Ron also shared with us that his favorite song is  “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor and his favorite food includes bulgogi and seaweed. Meet Ron.

WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVATION FOR RUNNING FOR OFFICE?

At the age of 10, I heard President John F. Kennedy’s call to service. My father was a WWII veteran who also taught me the same values of service. My adult life (41 years) has been spent in service to the nation in the Federal Government’s largest bureaucracy, the Department of Defense, both in active duty and civilian service.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PRIORITIES WITHIN THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS ELECTED OFFICE?

• Respond to the issues of concern to the 63rd District’s constituents
• Respond to each individual constituent when their issue or concern is expressed directly to me
• See RonHawkins2020.com for a list of specific issues (i.e. infrastructure, human trafficking, senior income tax relief, state bank, term limits, and legislative government oversight).

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO ACCOMPLISH THESE GOALS WITHIN THE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESTRICTION OF THE OFFICE?

• Perform my duties within the structure of the State of Michigan’s constitution.
• Work, not fight, with fellow legislators to accomplish legislation.
• Provide governmental oversight to executive branch offices and judiciary to ensure each is functioning effectively, and with any fraud, waste or abuse eliminated.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO SUPPORT THE GROWTH OF THE ECONOMY IF ELECTED?

• Eliminate unnecessary legislation or rules that overburden small businesses.
• Support expansion of technical training education within high schools.
• When government employees are responsible to regulate business activities, the government employee should have a working knowledge of the business activity they are regulating.
