The FIRST & 42 Forum: Meet Jen Richardson

Share

To help our community members make informed choices in the upcoming election, we asked candidates running for important local, state, and national seats to participate in our Forum to help you get to know them better. Today, meet Jen Richardson.

Seeking election as a U.S. House of Representatives representing Michigan’s 6th District, Jen Richardson’s motivation in running for office is to amplify the voices of working and middle-class families. “I believe we need more teachers, mothers, and other people that work on the front lines of our community crafting the policies that dictate our lives,” said Jen. “This kind of experience is invaluable to this position.” In this role, Jen’s top priorities would be to make high-quality childcare more affordable and accessible to families, expand access to high-quality healthcare, and improve access to high-quality educational opportunities. In addition to answering the hard-hitting questions, Jen also shared that her favorite campaign songs are “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye & Tami Terrell and “Tilted” by Christine And The Queens. Her favorite book is “Siddhartha” by Hermann Hesse. Meet Jen.

WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVATION FOR RUNNING FOR OFFICE?
The voices of working and middle-class families are not well represented in government. I believe we need more teachers, mothers, and other people that work on the front lines of our community crafting the policies that dictate our lives. This kind of experience is invaluable to this position.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PRIORITIES WITHIN THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS ELECTED OFFICE?

My priorities focus on uplifting working and middle-class families. I believe this can be done by:

  • Making high-quality childcare more affordable and accessible to families.
  • Expanding access to high-quality healthcare.
  • Improving access to high-quality educational opportunities.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO ACCOMPLISH THESE GOALS WITHIN THE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESTRICTION OF THE OFFICE?

I think there are many ways to accomplish these goals, but some ideas that I am supportive of are:

  • Creating new federally funded childcare networks; providing grants for expansion of current childcare options.
  • Expanding Medicaid and Medicare Coverage; offering a public option.
  • Funding public schools adequately and equitably.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO SUPPORT THE GROWTH OF THE ECONOMY IF ELECTED?

Two routes that I support are:

  • Opening up access and affordability of childcare to allow parents the freedom to advance their careers.
  • More access to Career and Technical Education and less debt for students pursuing college degrees.
