New federal data shows that Michigan’s beer production in 2019 increased four percent since 2017, equaling 1,428,445 barrels of beer for the year. This increase is notable since overall beer production in the U.S. has been trending down for years with a ten percent drop over the past decade. In Kalamazoo county, we’re brewing up the most beer in the state with Bell’s Brewery leading the way. Between Bell’s and the many microbreweries and brewpubs in the county, 131,206 barrels of beer were produced in the county and consumed within the state in 2019. This interactive map will show you how many barrels each county in the state produced if you’re interested in learning more about how Kalamazoo brew away the competition. If you really want to hop in and see what’s happening, you can check out this database from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission that allows you to look up the amount of beer produced and/or sold in Michigan by individual businesses in four categories: wholesalers, brewers, microbrewers, and brewpubs.
