The Product Design Program at the Western Michigan University Richmond Institute for Design + Innovation (RIDI) is taking innovation to a whole new level with its unique, interdisciplinary program preparing graduates to lead in the field of industrial design. Learn more about the program’s upcoming graduates that are open to opportunity in this Student Profile Series leading up to the RIDI Senior Show, April 21st.

What is the best lesson you learned from your classes, an internship, an instructor, or a mentor?

Nike was right, just do it. The more you work at something, the better you get. I know this sounds cliché, but its true. Even if its slow and steady.

What is the strongest skill you bring to an employer?

The single strongest skill I bring to employers is my ability to communicate. Being a people person, I love talking and this means that I’m able to make connections and use them in meaningful ways. Being able to communicate an idea is at the core of being a product designer, so being able to do this orally as well as visually and physically is an important skill to me.

What type of project or industry interests you?

Industrial Design & Character Design/Concept Development for various forms of media.

What project in your portfolio are you most proud of?

Eaton Transmission Repair Kit or FlyT Weather Drone Telemetry Device . Sorry for cheating, I couldn’t decide!

What/who is one person, place, or experience that had a positive impact on you during your time at Western Michigan University or in the Kalamazoo community?

Since its impossible for me to pick just one person who has positively impacted my life, I’ve decided to choose the Product Design studio itself. I’ve spent as much time at the studio as I’ve spent at my apartment, so this place has became like a second home to me. Not only did I meet mentors here but more importantly made friends, so instead of picking just one person, I choose the place I met them all.
