Kalamazoo County Doubles Down on Affordable Housing With Over $2 million in New Funding Opportunities

Share

Kalamazoo County is doubling down on its commitment to addressing the local housing crisis by providing additional funding opportunities for supportive services and multi-family housing projects, and for removing barriers to housing. Applications are now open for more than $2 million through April 24 and May 1, respectively.

“We know that safe, stable, and affordable housing is critical for the well-being of individuals and families, and we are committed to working with our partners to create more affordable housing options in our community,” said Housing Director Mary Balkema. “That’s why we are excited to announce that funding opportunities are once again available for those interested in developing affordable housing options in Kalamazoo County.”

After closing applications for funding rehab of single-family housing, single family new housing, and multi-family housing projects earlier this year, Balkema identified the need to provide further funding opportunities for housing supportive services and multi-family housing projects. Through April 24, applications are available for $335,000 in supportive services, such as down payment assistance or financial coaching, and $1.75 million for multi-family units, such as senior affordable housing or affordable multi-family rental housing.

“This is a chance to come together and help us address the affordable housing crisis in our area. We believe that by working collaboratively, we can create positive change and ensure that everyone in our community has access to safe, affordable housing,” said Balkema.

In tandem, the Public Housing Commission is opening applications through May 1 for a total of $200,000 in funding from the Local Housing Assistance Fund Millage Program that was approved by voters in 2015 to stabilize households who have children in school and are experiencing homelessness.

“As the downtown landscape evolves and becomes more dynamic, it’s clear that affordable housing is not just a social necessity, but a key ingredient for creating a truly thriving and inclusive community,” said Board of Commissioners Chair John Taylor. “By providing affordable housing options, we can ensure that everyone, regardless of income, has the opportunity to live and contribute to our vibrant county. Affordable housing is not just about meeting basic needs, it’s about building a stronger and more equitable community for all.”
