To help our community members make informed choices in the upcoming election, we asked candidates running for important local, state, and national seats to participate in our Forum to help you get to know them better. Today, meet John James.
Gary C. Peters is running for re-election to represent the state of Michigan in the U.S. Senate because he “believes Michiganders need a strong, independent voice fighting for the needs of our middle class and small businesses.” Looking forward, Gary says, “I am focused on continuing to address our public health and economic crises and getting Michiganders the resources they need—that has to be our priority. Broadly, I’m focused on lowering drug costs and expanding health care; supporting small businesses and expanding opportunities in the skilled trades; and protecting our Great Lakes.” Gary looks forward to hearing the Eagles’ “One of These Nights” playing on the loudspeakers. And on his downtime, you might catch him watching “Top Gun” with his favorite snack, Peanut M&Ms. Meet Gary.

WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVATION FOR RUNNING FOR OFFICE?
I am running for office because I believe Michiganders need a strong, independent voice fighting for the needs of our middle class and small businesses. While I am proud of the results I have delivered, I am seeking re-election because I know there is much more work to do.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PRIORITIES WITHIN THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS ELECTED OFFICE?
I am focused on continuing to address our public health and economic crises and getting Michiganders the resources they need—that has to be our priority. Broadly, I’m focused on lowering drug costs and expanding health care; supporting small businesses and expanding opportunities in the skilled trades; and protecting our Great Lakes.
HOW DO YOU PLAN TO ACCOMPLISH THESE GOALS WITHIN THE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESTRICTION OF THE OFFICE?
I’ll work with anyone to deliver results for Michigan. That’s why I am ranked as one of the most effective and bipartisan Senators. I recently passed my ninth bill through the Senate with bipartisan support this Congress, passing more standalone bills than any other Senator in the last two years.
HOW DO YOU PLAN TO SUPPORT THE GROWTH OF THE ECONOMY IF ELECTED?
Improving our economy starts with recovering from the economic crisis that the COVID-19 pandemic has created. That’s why I fought to secure aid for small businesses, expanded unemployment assistance and eligibility, and proposed creating the National Institute of Manufacturing to boost manufacturing in Michigan and safeguard our supply chains.
