To help our community members make informed choices in the upcoming election, we asked candidates running for important local, state, and national seats to participate in our Forum to help you get to know them better. We will share responses as they are submitted. Stay tuned to become acquainted with your local legislative leaders.
With a background in supporting community organizations and fundraising, Lisa Brayton is running to represent District 11 on the Kalamazoo County Commission. “The Commission Board is lacking fiscal responsibility, and people who truly care for folks. Thus, with my experience and determination, I am hoping to make a huge difference for our wonderful people in our community,” said Lisa. If elected, one of Lisa’s top priorities would be lowering taxes for the elderly population. “I find it so horrible that these folks are on a limited income, and yet their taxes increase so much that they find themselves having to leave their beloved home. I will be determined to hold people accountable, to be fiscally responsible,” said Lisa. In addition to the policy-focused questions, Lisa also shared with us that her favorite movie is “Pulp Fiction” by Quentin Tarantino and that she most enjoys Mexican food. Meet Lisa Brayton.

WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVATION FOR RUNNING FOR OFFICE?
I have always been an advocate for folks. I started a charity in 2002, which fed, sheltered, and gifted Kalamazoo Country Day and Portage Public Schools for approximately 16 years. I have sat on several PTO boards, raising thousands of dollars for both schools as well. I was a team mom for both of my boys’ sports teams for eight years. I have run our dental practice for well over 20 years. The Commission Board is lacking fiscal responsibility and people who truly care for folks. Thus, with my experience and determination, I am hoping to make a huge difference for our wonderful people in our community.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PRIORITIES WITHIN THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS ELECTED OFFICE?
One of my top priorities is to lower the taxes of our elderly population. I find it so horrible that these folks are on a limited income, and yet their taxes increase so much that they find themselves having to leave their beloved home. I will be determined to hold people accountable, to be fiscally responsible.
HOW DO YOU PLAN TO ACCOMPLISH THESE GOALS WITHIN THE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESTRICTIONS OF THE OFFICE?
I plan on working with all Commissioners to achieve these goals. I plan on working hard for all of our people in our community.
HOW DO YOU PLAN TO SUPPORT THE GROWTH OF THE ECONOMY IF ELECTED?
I plan to:
- Encourage small business growth and positive work environments.
- Bring my knowledge as a health care professional to continue to educate people on what to do per the COVID-19 crisis.
- Work and bridge the gap between the two parties.
