Together with the nearly 1,000 community colleges across the country, Kalamazoo Valley Community College will celebrate Community College Month in April. This month-long campaign was designed to improve awareness about the economic, academic, and equity advantages of attending community colleges and to break the stigma associated with public, two-year colleges.
“National Community College Month is an opportunity to demonstrate that community colleges, including Kalamazoo Valley, should be the first choice of many college-bound students,” said college President L. Marshall Washington, Ph.D. “The impact our graduates make on the region is vital to our local and state economies.”
Community colleges are a uniquely American educational model designed to guarantee access to affordable, high-quality higher education for all. They serve as an on-ramp to bachelor’s, master’s, and higher-level degrees for many students and particularly for the most demographically and socioeconomically diverse students.
“Without community colleges, many people would not be able to access higher education at all,” Washington said.
More than 300,000 students have enrolled at Kalamazoo Valley Community College since its founding in 1966 and many stay in the region after graduation and help to make it prosperous and growing. The credentials earned by Valley students prepare them to transfer to four-year universities or to fill in-demand careers in such fields as healthcare, skilled and professional trades, technology, culinary arts, art and new media, and more.
The summer semester begins on May 6 at Kalamazoo Valley Community College; registration opened the week of Monday, March 6. Fall semester begins on Sept. 6 with registration opening the week of Monday, April 3. For more information, go to www.kvcc.edu.
