The Haworth College of Business at Western Michigan University (WMU) highlights some of its top business influencers with “The 30,” an annual publication that recognizes recent alumni who have made an impact in the business world.

INTRODUCING THIS YEAR’S CLASS OF THE 30

While the 2021 honorees are shaking up their industries around the globe, several are making a difference right here in greater Kalamazoo. “Every individual inducted into ‘The 30’ represents unmatched work ethic, limitless potential, and the ability to achieve anything they put their mind to. It’s an honor to be included,” says Jared Coleman, a 2018 graduate and surgery contract specialist for Bronson Healthcare.

In his position, Coleman ensures healthcare workers have exactly what they need so they can focus on prioritizing patients. Responsible for more than $30 million in annual spending for surgical units that include general and robotic surgery, cardiac and vascular operations, anesthesiology, and more, his goal is to help break down supply chain silos to identify cost savings opportunities while also maximizing quality and patient care.

His role has become especially critical during COVID-19. “The healthcare industry has faced a very steep learning curve,” says Coleman. “We understand the supply chain is an imperfect system and can now work together to leverage these unique experiences. I’ve been able to use my supply chain background to think outside the box and provide solutions for a number of scenarios. The pandemic has taught me to be resilient and to accept challenges and learning opportunities equally.”

Personal growth and professional development is something that The 30 has provided to Coleman, in addition to expanding his network. “The 30 can be a unique talking point that leads to deeper conversation,” he says. “It provides a great link to WMU and validates my professional experiences.”

Coleman recently joined the advisory council for a new program at Western, a bachelor’s degree in health administration, launching in 2022. He will use his experience to help form this collaboration between WMU Haworth, the College of Health and Human Services, and the College of Arts and Sciences, preparing students for careers in a variety of fields including healthcare management, public health, and health informatics.

What makes being selected to ‘The 30’ a special honor? According to honorees, the recognition helps fuel the Bronco spirit to succeed in one’s career, to make a significant mark in business, and to leave a positive impact on others.
