When I started Jeannie Cleaning ten years ago, I thought excellent customer service was enough. I quickly learned it went beyond that.
Coming from a restaurant background, I assumed my leadership experience would translate seamlessly to my cleaning business. But in our first year, we printed 24 W-2s for a team of just eight people. That extreme turnover forced me to pause and reflect.
Strong systems and satisfied clients weren’t enough. My leadership required something deeper: a culture that supports, motivates, and values the people on our team. That insight shaped our Culture Magic program — a people-first framework built on mentorship, growth, clarity, impact, and core values. Today, it guides how we lead and create meaningful work experiences every day.
The Responsibility of Leadership
There’s a statistic I often share as I teach the Culture Magic program to my team and other business leaders:
The average person spends approximately 81,396 hours at work — that is 1 out of every 4 waking hours or the equivalent of nine years of their life.
Those are hours we can never give back. When someone chooses to work for your company, they are exchanging irreplaceable time for a paycheck. That reality changed how I lead.
Early on, I believed strong systems alone would build a sustainable business. Experience taught me otherwise. Culture matters.
We asked ourselves: How do we make those nine years meaningful?
We integrated our core values of Caring, Excellence and Community throughout our business to guide decisions, attract aligned talent, and strengthen business identity. This intentionality shifted the focus of our leadership to the five ingredients of our Culture Magic Program:
- Mentorship – Empowering leadership skills to cultivate a sustainable, positive team culture and drive business success.
- Acceptance – Fostering belonging to strengthen company culture, boost employee engagement, and reduce turnover.
- Growth – Promoting continuous learning and career development to enhance team satisfaction, retention, and company resilience.
- Impact – Building a purpose-driven culture to inspire employee commitment, improve retention, and attract loyal customers.
- Clarity – Establishing clear structures and communication systems to support leadership, culture, and growth effectively.
Our mission became more than a statement on paper. It became something our team wears every day — literally. Our uniforms don’t just say Jeannie Cleaning. They say “Making Lives Better.” Those words serve as a daily reminder of the standard we hold — to do work that matters — for our clients and for one another.
Good Culture Creates Better Service
House cleaning is deeply personal work. Our team members enter people’s homes — their most private spaces. To do that well, they must feel supported, respected, and proud of what they do.
When culture is healthy, teams feel it.
“Jeannie truly cares about all of her employees, providing us with tools to succeed in our professional and personal lives. I feel blessed to have worked here for 10 years.” — Megan, Jeannie Cleaning Team Member
Good jobs provide more than income. They create confidence, growth, stability, and belonging. And when employees feel valued, they show up differently — with energy, professionalism, and care. As the world-renowned entrepreneur Richard Branson once said, “The way you treat your employees is the way they will treat your customers.”
Customers definitely notice.
“Professional, precise, and pleasant — all of the above. I expected great results with the cleaning, but on the business side, this company shines as well. Five-plus stars!” — Jeannie Cleaning Client
The quality of service in any industry rarely exceeds the quality of its culture.
A Catalyst to Giving Back to the Community
The ripple effect of my business and culture extends beyond employees and clients.
In Southwest Michigan, professional house cleaning reduces stress for working parents, supports aging residents, and brings dignity during difficult health seasons.
That belief led us to partner with Cleaning for a Reason, a nonprofit providing free home cleanings to cancer patients. Since 2017, our team has donated cleanings to nearly 200 patients across Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids.
This work isn’t about charity alone. It’s about recognizing that when one family is supported, an entire community feels the impact.
The Ripple Continues
Ten years in, what matters most hasn’t changed. We create good jobs. We care for people through our work. And we contribute, in meaningful ways, to stronger families and healthier communities.
The ripple effect of a people-first business may not always be visible at first glance. But when people are supported, valued, and proud of the work they do, the impact spreads — from the workplace, to the home, to the community, and beyond.
