Driving Innovation: How Marvin Potts Is Transforming the Concrete Industry

Share

When Marvin Potts began his career at Consumers Concrete in 1999 as an assistant dispatcher, he couldn’t have imagined the impact he would one day have on the concrete industry. Now, over two decades later, Potts serves as the Operations Manager, leading with a vision that blends innovation, sustainability, and community engagement. His efforts have not only addressed critical industry challenges but have also set new standards that competitors strive to emulate.

His leadership and innovative contributions have not gone unnoticed. In recognition of his significant impact on the industry and the community, Potts was recently named one of Crain’s Notable Black Leaders for 2024. This prestigious honor reflects his commitment to driving positive change and setting new standards within the concrete industry.

“It’s always nice to be recognized no matter what you’re doing,” Potts says. “It’s a humbling experience. Looking back at all the things I’ve accomplished over 25 years—both in my work and community involvement—makes me proud. But I don’t want to rest on my laurels. There’s still a lot more to accomplish.”

One of Potts’ most significant contributions is the development of an in-house Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training program, initiated around 2013. Recognizing the industry’s struggle with a shortage of qualified drivers and the difficulty in attracting younger talent, he spearheaded a solution that was both practical and forward-thinking.

“We’ve been very blessed with this program,” Potts explains. “By creating our own CDL training, we provide valuable opportunities for entry-level employees and ensure a pipeline of skilled drivers for the future.”

This program is unique among ready-mix concrete companies in Michigan. It allows individuals—often referrals from current employees or those with some construction knowledge—to gain valuable skills and credentials. The program has adapted over the years to meet changing regulations, especially after the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) updated its requirements in 2022, necessitating formal training centers.

“Having our own training program ensures that we can consistently keep our trucks staffed with skilled drivers,” Potts says. “It also brings in younger people who might not have considered a career in construction or trucking.”

Recognizing the various challenges facing the concrete industry, Potts tackles them head-on through his initiatives. Not only does the program address a critical staffing need for Consumers Concrete, but it also empowers individuals by enhancing their earning potential and providing a sustainable career path. This proactive approach ensures that Consumers Concrete remains staffed with qualified and enthusiastic employees.

“There’s been a consistent shortage of people in the CDL industry,” he notes. “Our program helps us stand out and develop programs to help with that.”

Potts also recognizes the critical role of technology in staying competitive. “Being on the forefront of technology sets us apart from competitors,” he emphasizes. By adopting advanced systems for concrete production and equipping trucks with the latest technology, he boosts efficiency and appeals to a new generation of workers.

But Potts didn’t stop at training; he wanted to foster collaboration and showcase the skills of his team. In 2023, he initiated a mixer driver rodeo—a competition featuring 11 events that test drivers on safety and proficiency.

“It was really fun,” he recalls. “The rodeo revolves around safety and skill, establishing camaraderie among the drivers.”

The event was such a success that it caught the attention of the Michigan Concrete Association, which then started its own statewide competition. Now, drivers from Consumers Concrete compete at national levels, highlighting the company’s commitment to excellence and innovation.

“I was so pumped about it,” Potts says enthusiastically. “Seeing it come to fruition and our drivers participating nationally is a great accomplishment.”

At the core of these advancements is Potts’ leadership style. He believes in leading by example, being genuine, and maintaining a positive attitude—even in challenging situations.

“I’ve always tried to be the best version of myself,” he shares. “Being real and reachable is important. People can perceive whether you’re genuine.”

His approach fosters an environment where innovation thrives, and team members feel empowered to contribute ideas and take initiative.

Potts credits much of his success to mentorship and is committed to paying it forward. He speaks highly of his mentor, Steve, who saw potential in him and provided guidance.

“He shared so much about the job with me when I was in a role that didn’t need to know everything,” Potts reflects. “That helped instill confidence in me.”

Now, as a leader, Potts focuses on developing his team, giving them additional responsibilities, and encouraging their growth.

Looking ahead, Potts is excited about upcoming projects like the event center in downtown Kalamazoo.

“There’s so many big projects coming up,” he says enthusiastically. “I really like being a part of the big things.”

He remains committed to continuous innovation and addressing future industry challenges, all while maintaining Consumers Concrete’s reputation as the go-to company in the field. Through his visionary programs and genuine leadership, he’s addressing critical challenges and setting new benchmarks for excellence. His story exemplifies how proactive solutions and a commitment to innovation can drive an industry forward.
